Geology is geography. When we interpret geological data, such as seismic and well data, we try to understand the paleogeography of a landscape that existed millions of years ago.
From vertical to horizontal
Because our methods of data acquisition are restricted, the geological data from wells is presented in vertical sections. The vertical data then needs to be transferred to horizontal understanding. With seismic data, we are used to interpret cross-sections into horizons that we grid into maps. However, for well data the horizontal transformation has not been as rigorously used. One reason has been the lack of adequate and easy-to-use software.
The key is the transformation of vertical data to horizontal display to make the interpretation more geological.
Better interpretations. With IC Software, vertical well interpretation can easily be transferred to horizontal for further analysis. This is beneficial when integrating well and seismic interpretations. The well results can be extracted on a stratigraphic level, which is similar to gridding seismic interpretations into mapped surfaces. The results can then be displayed geographically and further interpreted in a paleogeographical view together with the seismic interpretations. An example is shown below:
